HubSpot for Law Firms and Legal Practices

The American Bar Association's own survey has roughly half the profession naming a mail client as its CRM. That is not a technology gap so much as a record-keeping one: the relationship history exists, distributed across inboxes, and cannot be asked a question.

Legal work in this practice keeps arriving at the same boundary — the matter belongs to the practice management system, the relationship does not, and most firms have nowhere for the second to live.

The decision this sector turns on

A matter and a client relationship are different objects with different lifespans. A matter opens, runs and closes. A relationship survives every matter inside it, and it is the thing a firm's future revenue actually depends on.

Practice management systems model the matter well and the relationship barely at all, because they were built for the work rather than for the business development around it. Modelling matters one-to-many against the engagement, rather than one-to-one, is the decision most of this work turns on.

The second recurring question is where a client stops being marketing's responsibility and becomes the firm's, which is a permissions and cost question as much as an operational one.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

It should not be asked to. Practice management holds matters, time, trust accounting and conflicts, all of which carry professional obligations a CRM is not built to meet. HubSpot's role is the relationship and the business development around it, joined to the matter record rather than duplicating it. Clio is the usual counterpart, and matters are modelled one-to-many against the engagement.

Directly, and usually by accident. Every form submission creates a contact with the marketing flag set by default, so careers applicants, opposing counsel, investors and bank contacts all count toward a billable tier nobody intended them to occupy. The published study reduced a firm from roughly nine thousand marketing contacts to under seven thousand without deleting a record, by classifying what each entry point had created.

Every enquiry arrives as a record with a source, a practice area and an owner, and the clock on it is visible. The common failure is not a slow response but an invisible one: enquiries arriving by three channels into two inboxes, where nobody can say how many are open or how long the oldest has waited.
